What is a ‘Combi boiler’?
A ‘combi’ boiler is a combination of both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single unit. This means that you don’t need to have a separate hot water storage cylinder or cold water storage tank in your loft as combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when a tap is turned on.
Apart from the space-saving advantage, what are the other benefits of installing a new combi boiler?
As water is heated instantly as opposed to being heated and then stored, this makes combi boilers cost-effective and energy-efficient. For example, with regular boilers, hot water is produced twice a day, regardless of whether you need it or not. This requires the boiler to fire up to make the hot water, and if this hot water does not get used, the water just simply cools down. This is, of course, a waste of energy. Combi boilers on the other hand, only produce hot water when you require it (as in, when a tap or the shower is turned on), so this results in big energy savings.
Also with combi boilers, the hot water is delivered at mains pressure, meaning you can get a powerful shower without needing a separate pump.
Installation of a combi boiler is also cheaper than that of other boilers due to there being less pipework.
Should I have a combi boiler installed in my home?
If you are short on space or you want to do a loft conversion, combi boilers are fantastic, as you can do away with the water tanks. Also, if your boiler is getting on a bit, you might want to consider replacing it with a combi. People in flats and small houses can benefit greatly from the extra space.
Combi boilers are ideal for households with a relatively small demand for hot water at any one time. However, if you need to run two showers at the same time in the morning for example, then a combi boiler won’t be suitable, and you are better off with a regular or system boiler.
