Citizens Advice is calling for gas and electric bills to come down as quickly as possible after industry figures show customers on standard variable tariffs are paying expensive prices for their energy.
Utility regulator Ofgem says it is trying to speed up an energy price cap – but the energy suppliers appear to dither and move at a snail’s pace when required to cut bills, while able to move very fast to raise prices.
Ofgem hopes a price cap for vulnerable customers will be in place for January as well as making switching suppliers easier for all utility consumers. But first, it must hold a consultation with consumer groups.
Citizens Advice say suppliers must be compelled to move their customers off highly-priced standard variable tariffs, many of whom will not be helped by a ‘safeguard tariff’ price cap.
** Another way to save hundreds of pounds on gas bills is to replace an old boiler with a new energy-efficient unit. Aura Heating supply the widely-recognised best UK boiler brand, Worcester Bosch (recommended by Which? consumer body as a ‘Best Buy’), as well as other leading brands such as Vaillant, Baxi, and Ideal.
