What is a magnetic filter and why do you need one?

A magnetic filter is a special filter used to help prevent sludge or debris build-up that could damage the heating system and they are installed on the pipework of the boiler. It does not have any mechanical parts and works using a magnet to attract metal debris. The metal or magnetite is a by-product of corrosion of metals within the system with the increase in different systems, unfortunately, there is an increase in the amount of debris and corrosion too!

Any heating system made with steel radiators will always corrode as it is water and metal creating rust, thus creating sludge. This sludge accumulates in the radiators – limited their output, efficiency, and circulation. This sludge can also get trapped in the boiler or heating pump and cause total failure! The sludge can cause day to day impacts on the system as a whole – noise, difficulty heating radiators, cloudy water, overall less efficiency, increased carbon footprint, higher energy bills, and many other unpleasantries.

Without a magnetic filter, a powerflush might be needed or, worst-case scenario – a totally new system might be needed!
