Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) explained

Launched in 2023, the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), is designed to help households enjoy more energy efficient homes. Not only will it help homeowners to reduce their heating bills and stay warmer, it will also assist in lowering energy consumption, which in turn reduces carbon emissions.

How does GBIS work?

The government is working alongside energy providers and contractors to provide funding and support for loft or cavity wall insulation. Eligible households can have 80-100% of the costs for insulation covered, helping them enjoy a more sustainable lifestyle and lower energy bills.

Who is eligible for GBIS?

GBIS is available to many more households than is recognised. Most homeowners assume they wouldn’t meet the criteria, but there are only two qualifying factors. In England, your home must:

  • Be in council tax bands A-D
  • Have an EPC certificate of D-G

You can be a homeowner, landlord or tenant to apply, and there is no income assessment for eligibility. You can simply check if you match the criteria on the government website and apply via the online form.

What are the benefits of GBIS?

The scheme has already benefitted thousands of homes in the following ways:

  • Lower energy costs: Insulation is a key way of reducing heat loss in homes, enabling occupants to save on their energy bills.
  • Health benefits: The reduction in heat loss means that many occupants, whether vulnerable, on low incomes or experiencing health issues, can enjoy a warmer environment that positively impacts their health through the winter months.
  • Reduced carbon emissions: Better heat retention means boilers can heat the home more efficiently, meaning they are switched on for less time. This results in fewer carbon emissions from burning the gas or oil in the boiler.
  • Increased property values: An improved EPC rating can result in an increased property valuation, potentially adding hundreds or thousands of pounds.

Types of insulation available

The main types of insulation available under the scheme include:

  • Loft insulation: This is placed in the space between the ceiling and the roof of a building. Heat is trapped in the air pockets of the insulation material, preventing it from escaping.
  • Cavity wall insulation: Available for homes built with cavity walls (typically post-1930), this is a material placed in the cavity between the inner and outer walls. It traps warm air, preventing it from circulating around the cavity.
  • Room in roof insulation: This is a process that involves installing insulation boards behind the plasterboard walls of a converted loft.

The government website also states that solid wall insulation, underfloor insulation and flat or pitched roof insulation may be available under the scheme. However, this will depend on what your energy provider can accommodate.
